April is women's eye health and safety month. ๐
Two out of every three people living with blindness or vision problems are women, according to the National Eye Institute.
On average, women, live longer than men, and are at greater risk of developing eye conditions associated with ageing. Women are at a higher risk for certain eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, autoimmune diseases, cataracts, dry eyes, thyroid eye diseases, and vision impairment. Women also go through more hormonal changes in life with birth control, pregnancy, and menopause that can all affect and fluctuate vision changes.
It is important that women prioritize their eye health to protect their eyesight by scheduling regular eye exams to check for any vision problems or eye diseases.

Today is National Vitamin C Day!
Did you know?
Scientific evidence suggests vitamin C lowers the risk of developing cataracts and when taken in combination with other essential nutrients, it can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration and visual acuity loss.
“While we cannot totally avoid developing cataracts, we may be able to delay their onset and keep them from worsening significantly by eating a diet rich in vitamin C,” said study author Christopher Hammond, M.D., FRCOphth, professor of ophthalmology at King’s College London.
**The researchers noted that the findings only pertain to vitamins consumed through food and not supplements.**

Join us as we salute our veterans for their service and dedication to our country. The Shipp & Wooten Eye Center Team are forever grateful for your bravery, hard work, and sacrifice.
The Durysta Implant may be a good treatment option for those burdened by the need for glaucoma eye drops.
In order to maintain the best control of glaucoma and prevent vision loss, many patients with glaucoma must be disciplined in their use of eye drops to maintain the proper eye pressure or Intraocular Pressure (IOP). For many, glaucoma laser treatment is often helpful in reducing or eliminating glaucoma eye drops but for others eye drop use is part of their daily routine several times each day. Recently a microscopic implant containing a glaucoma eye pressure medication was FDA approved to help glaucoma patients improve their quality of life by reducing the need for eye drops as well as ensuring better consistency and compliance and giving a new exciting option for lowering IOP in the treatment of glaucoma and a step in the right direction to reducing blindness related to this common disease.
If you or someone you know is being treated for glaucoma with eye drops, please schedule an eye exam and ask about options for glaucoma treatment to help reduce the need for daily eye drops at 662-286-2020, or visit our website (link in bio).
What is Glaucoma exactly?
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that culminates in the irreversible damage of the optic nerve, resulting in blindness. It usually happens when fluid builds up in the front part of your eye. That extra fluid increases the pressure in your eye, damaging the optic nerve.
Unfortunately, it is largely a silent condition with minimal discomfort and patients may not be cognizant of visual loss until the disease is advanced. It is imperative to be evaluated if you have been told you have suspicious nerves, a family history of glaucoma, or previously been on treatment for glaucoma.
Here at Shipp & Wooten Eye Center, our doctors will discuss all the findings at your visit and formulate a treatment plan with you.

Halloween is approaching quickly and it’s time to create those photo-worthy costumes – but we want to ensure an eye infection isn’t a part of the ensemble. October is Halloween Eye Safety Month and below we have some helpful tips on how to make sure your Halloween costume doesn’t leave complications for your vision.
1. Get an eye exam.
Don’t be haunted by an eye infection. If you’d like to obtain decorative lenses for a Halloween costume, make sure to get an eye exam so your eye doctor can give the proper prescription and provide you with information about the proper contact lens cleaning and care.
2. Get A Prescription for Decorative Lenses
The CDC and the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommend not to purchase decorative contact lenses from costume shops, online stores, beauty salons, drug stores, flea markets, or anywhere that doesn’t require a prescription. Make sure to see a doctor to get lenses properly fitted, so you're not at risk for vision problems such as eye infections and eye sores which can lead to permanent vision loss.
3. Be Mindful of Makeup Use
Halloween makeup can be a fun way to enhance any costume, but it’s essential to not share makeup for the risk of eye infection. Practice good hygiene by taking off all makeup before bed and avoid using old, expired makeup. For eyelash extensions, it’s important to test for lash glue allergies and practice proper hygiene during application.
4. Have Fun!
Now that you’ve gotten your eye exam and your costume is complete, it’s time to go out and have fun. Enjoy your Halloween parties knowing your eyes will look ‘cool’ and won’t cause any long-lasting effects after the fun is over.
Spread Awareness and Enjoy Spooky Season!

Friday Fun Fact: ๐๐
Your nose is always visible in your line of sight, but thanks to your brain, it's not blocking your field of vision... The mechanism called unconscious selective attention makes it so that your brain can ignore the presence of your ever-visible nose.
Finding it harder to read that smartphone up close?๐คณ
Around age 40, most people will start to experience “presbyopia” which literally means “aging eye.” This makes it harder to read, thread a needle, or do other close-up tasks.
Aging causes the natural lens inside the eye to lose flexibility. When this happens, it becomes much more challenging to focus.
Presbyopia is an almost inevitable part of aging, and the most obvious solution is using reading glasses. Reading glasses can help you see up close, but they have a limited design. You can’t wear them all the time, as they distort your distance vision and your ability to see things far away. Luckily, reading glasses aren’t your only option for treating presbyopia.
Presbyopia can be treated using over-the-counter reading glasses, but there are also advanced treatments such as drops and surgical solutions to help reduce the dependency on reading glasses!

Frequently Asked Questions: Why do you dilate my eyes?
Drops are placed in each eye to widen the pupil, which is the opening in the center of the iris (the colored part of the eye). Dilating the pupil allows more light to enter the eye the same way opening a door allows light into a dark room.
Getting your eyes dilated is an important part of any eye exam, but if you haven’t had it done before, you may be a little nervous about it. Don’t be! It’s totally harmless and gives your eye doctor a better look at the back of your eyes to help spot any signs of common eye conditions like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, or other problems with the retina. Dilation can help your doctor diagnose any issues early and take steps to help protect your vision.
Approximately 37 million adults in America have age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma, all of which can cause visual impairment or blindness. However, recent studies show that making healthy choices and getting regular eye exams can help reduce a person’s risk of vision loss.
Here are a few tips to help keep your eyes young and healthy.

What is Oculoplastic surgery?
Oculoplastic surgery is a branch of ophthalmology that focuses on plastic surgery procedures relating to the eyes, as well as the structures that surround it. This pertains to cosmetic or reconstructive surgery on areas around the eyes, such as the eyelids. Droopy upper eyelids are a condition that may require oculoplastic surgery. Droopy upper eyelids, also known as dermatochalasis, can interfere with your daily activities. Because vision is affected, we may be able to bill your medical insurance for this procedure.
What types of eyelid surgeries are done by our surgeons at Shipp & Wooten Eye Center?
*Blepharoplasty – Surgery of the upper and/or lower eyelids.
*Ptosis Repair – Elevating droopy eyelids.
*Brow Lifts – Elevating droopy eyebrows.

“I was 75% blind in my right eye and 50% in my left eye. I was told I might not ever have good vision in my right eye again. I was referred to Shipp & Wooten Eye Center for cataract surgery and given several options at my evaluation. The Light Adjustable Lens was one of my options. It was an extra expense, but it was well worth it. I would recommend it to any and everyone. This new technology was a blessing from God for me. It’s the best thing I ever done!! I am now seeing 20/20 out of both eyes!! I’m seeing colors I’ve never seen before!! I seen a rainbow for the first time since I can remember, and I didn’t realize it had so many beautiful vibrant colors. I am so happy with my vision. My grandkids, I knew they were beautiful, but the details of their faces, they are absolutely beautiful. If you are on the fence about your surgery and your lens option. The light adjustable lens is the way to go.”

What’s the difference between traditional and advanced cataract surgery?
Most cataract surgeons either perform traditional or advanced cataract surgery.
In traditional cataract surgery, your eye surgeon will make a small incision in the side of your cornea with a hand-held blade to remove the clouded portion of the lens. Then, a small probe is inserted into your eye to induce a process called phacoemulsification. The probe will release ultrasonic waves that break up the clouded lens so that it can then be suctioned out by your surgeon. After the cataract is removed, an artificial lens called an intraocular lens, or IOL, is inserted into the eye. Traditional cataract surgery with a conventional IOL can correct your distance vision or your near vision. After having traditional cataract surgery, you may still need glasses.
Advanced cataract surgery is performed the same way. Only the advanced intraocular lens, or IOL, can correct your vision for distance, up close, and everything in between, including astigmatism. Patients are 2x as likely to achieve 20/20 distance vision at six months compared to those choosing traditional cataract surgery with a conventional IOL. It is highly customizable and it gives the patient the ability to “try out” their vision and make changes up to 3x before locking in their final vision. It can improve near vision without compromising distance or night vision. With advanced cataract surgery, you can achieve enhanced vision customized to suit your lifestyle and reduce your need for glasses.
The first IOL implants were monofocal, meaning the IOL has a fixed focal point. Though they can provide pristine visual acuity, their single fixed focusing point requires you to wear reading glasses after cataract surgery because the recommended lens power facilitates mid-range or distance vision, not close up.
Now with the new advanced technology available to you, we introduce the the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL). It enables our surgeons to preview and dial-in your vision until it meets your personal desires and lifestyle requirements. Custom tailoring your vision to your specific needs and freeing you of glasses.
If you have think you have symptoms of cataracts or if you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts, make an appointment today to discuss the Light Adjustable Lens™ from RxSight®, the first and only lens that can be optimized by Dr. Darwin Wooten, Dr. John Shipp, or Dr. Bernard Shipp, and then customized by you after cataract surgery.

When it comes to #Cataract surgery there are always two commonly asked questions. Is cataract surgery painful and how long is the recovery time?
#Cataract surgery is very quick, lasting less than 10-15 minutes. It is one of the most commonly performed outpatient procedures today and patients report little to no pain from cataract surgery.
For #Recovery, most patients fully recover in about a week. Most patients are back to work or daily routines after the second day with mild limitations – no heavy lifting over 10lbs and no bending over at the waist for seven full days. Your vision may be blurry right after surgery, so it is recommended that you take the day to rest.

How much will my cataract surgery cost and what is covered by insurance?
Calculating how much of your cataract surgery will be covered by insurance or out of pocket is dependent on the choices you make between the different procedures and lenses.
The procedure itself is typically covered by insurance providers. However, only the traditional cataract surgery is covered by insurance. Advanced cataract surgery is not covered by insurance.
While Advanced Cataract Surgery is not covered by insurance, there are several financing options available to help pay for the procedure.
We understand cost is a huge factor for almost anyone researching cataract surgery options. Which begs the question: Why anyone would pay for advanced cataract surgery when they could have their surgery completely covered by insurance (minus copays and coinsurance)?
You'll have to ask yourself: What is your vision worth? The biggest advantage to advanced cataract surgery is its ability to correct both your distance and reading vision. Having the ability to live life free from bifocals or reading glasses is worth the extra cost for many of our patients. Your needs are best determined by your daily activities and which type of vision is of foremost importance to complete those activities. Your eye surgeon will work very closely with you to determine your goals, so that you can be as satisfied as possible with your vision post-surgery.
Some age-related issues develop gradually, while others may seem to come out of nowhere. Call us at (662)286-2020 if you experience symptoms like sudden blurriness, or vision loss, an increase in the number of “floaters” you see, eye pain, double vision, flashes of light, or redness or swelling of your eye or eyelid. Any of these could indicate an urgent, sight-threatening condition that needs immediate treatment.
Sometimes you may not realize you have a cataract because it does not significantly affect your vision. However, when symptoms such as blurry vision, double vision, changes in perception of color, increased sensitivity to glare, and more, begin to interfere with your daily life, it may be time to see a specialist. Such vision changes could mean you’ve begun to develop a cataract in one or both of your eyes. Call to schedule an evaluation today - (662)286-2020
Did you know that the eyes themselves are not what actually allow you to see? They are simply a conveyance for messages sent from the brain, via the optic nerve.

Durysta®! Have you heard of it?
In order to maintain the best control of glaucoma and prevent vision loss, many patients with glaucoma must be consistent in their use of eye drops. There are several surgical options for the treatment of glaucoma that are very helpful in reducing the need for eye drops, but for others eye drop use is part of their daily routine, and the need is several times each day.
Dr. Darwin Wooten, Dr. John Shipp, & Dr. Bernard Shipp are excited to now offer you Durysta®, a tiny dissolvable implant that automatically releases medicine to help reduce high pressure inside your eye. It is to help glaucoma patients and ocular hypertension patients improve their quality of life by reducing the need for eye drops. This is an exciting option for lowering your intraocular pressure in the treatment of glaucoma and ocular hypertension, and huge step in the right direction to reducing blindness related to this common disease.
If you or someone you know is being treated for glaucoma or ocular hypertension, schedule a consultation, and ask about options for glaucoma treatment to help reduce the need for daily eye drops. 662-286-2020

We just heard it was #NationalBlueberrymuffinday! Are you a Blueberry lover? Us too! Here are some interesting facts about blueberries and eye health:
Eating blueberries regularly can help improve your vision and strengthen the blood vessels in the back of your eyes. They are also known to help lower high blood pressure and help with inflammation. Even more so, they help to make sure plenty of oxygen is getting to your retina. Blueberries are also packed with antioxidants which may help protect against glaucoma, cataracts, as well as certain cancers, and they are also known to help fight dry eye. All those benefits from just a handful of blueberries a day!
Thank you for the great reviews Mr. Gerald and Ms. Linda!!!
